SOUTH HULL DISTRICT

SOUTH HULL was originally platted just before World War II as housing for military families. The many historical homes in the district were designed for young families in a variety of classic architectural styles from French colonial to cozy Cape Cod bungalows. Unique features include Florida Rooms, front yard verandas and backyard porches, and spacious sunlit living quarters. The district remains zoned mainly for single family dwellings. Residents say it is a great place to raise a family, and also a wonderful retirement neighborhood with a strong sense of community.

The neighborhood nestles in an abundance of old growth trees, mature azalea and camellia hedges, and lush backyard gardens. The district is bordered on the north by the Historic Garden District and on the east by the Old Cloverdale Historic District. Of the three, South Hull is considered the most affordable. Just a walk away from the shops in Cloverdale on Fairview, South Hull is a short drive to the nightlife, festivals, restaurants, historical buildings and Civil Rights sites in Downtown Montgomery and to Maxwell Air Force Base.

Over the decades the strong community, convenient location, and affordability of South Hull have attracted an urban mix of cultures and lifestyles as well as a wide variety of professions… trades people, teachers, university professors, military personnel and retirees from Maxwell Air Force Base, local and state government officials, lawyers as well as artists, poets, novelists, and graphic designers. South Hull is also home to numerous intrepid travelers, avid sport enthusiasts, musicians, international cooks, and Master gardeners.

South Hull District Association

Since 1954, South Hull has been served by an active neighborhood association which promotes positive relationships and life-long friendships among District residents. It continues to champion issues and projects important to the well-being of the neighborhood. Membership in SHDA is open to both homeowners and renters. Annual events sponsored by SHDA such as the Christmas Party and Annual Picnic provide chances for newcomers and long-time residents and their families to connect for good food and fun. Through SHDA efforts, South Hull is currently under consideration for Historical designation by the City of Montgomery.

South Hull Park & Gardens

The community has recently added a park with gardens and a covered gazebo which provides green space for family and friend gatherings, play space for children, or simply space to relax, listen to the birds, and smell the roses in a peaceful environment. The Park hosts events such as a Family-Friendly Halloween festival, Christmas events, workshops on gardening and other topics of interest, and children’s activities including an upcoming gardening project for kids.
