The Story of South Hull Park & Gardens

In 2024 a family home was destroyed by fire at 3301 Wilmington Road. Grateful to the neighborhood for the help and support during their transition to their new home, the family decided to donate the lot as a park for the South Hull District community.

The land was transferred to Friends of South Hull, Inc in May of 2025. The non-profit is responsible for the management, design, and maintenance of the park, and also for creating and implementing social and educational programs.

The land cannot not be sold for any purpose other than a community park.

With the excellent help of the South Hull District Association (SHDA) a start-up grant was written and awarded by Montgomery Neighborhood Services. Within a short period, the Park had enough donations from other sources to move forward. By August the gazebo was constructed and play area equipment in place. With the help of dedicated volunteers, the park was able to open by August 28 2025, for the Neighbor Night Out celebration.

Since opening, the Park has added several perennial gardens and built a perimeter fence. The pollinator beds and other greenery are central to the mission of the park which must be maintained as sustainable green space. The Park has hosted events including the Neighbor Night Out, Family Friendly Halloween, the annual SHA Yard Sale, SHDA meetings, and birthday parties since opening in August.

Although we have had generous support from our city council person Andrew Szymanski, County Commissioner Isaiah Sankey, and Montgomery Neighborhood Services, the park is not maintained by either the city or the county. This means we depend on volunteers from the community. This works well in our book, as it serves our mission of helping sustain strong bonds within the community through Park activities.
